The Path to “We Win” and “Film School”

After years of being unable to write songs, the single “We Win” and EP “Film School” mark a turning point in my life, and a return to being an active songwriter and artist.

After moving my family down to Nashville in the late 1990’s – primarily because I found myself isolated and unable to support my wife and two you kids in Toronto – I discovered that writing songs in Nashville was entirely different from anything I had experienced before. I could take weeks, months or even years to complete a song previously. In Nashville my publisher expected me to write two songs a day, every day. The writing sessions were always with one or two collaborators, two sessions a day; 10am to 1pm, an hour for lunch, and then 2pm to 5.

My favorite from that period is “See Me Through” recorded by Rascal Flatts, and co-written with lead singer Gary Levox. But after a good number of years doing that day after day, I was burnt out, and could no longer give my all to the cause. So I quit. But after those years of writing the “Nashville” way, I couldn’t find my way back to the way I wrote songs. The blank page remained blank, and I thought my songwriting days were gone for good. So, I turned my attention to trying to make the world a better place for the next generation of songwriters and artists.

After five or six years, I was encouraged by my wife, Joanne, and good friends in Nashville and elsewhere to try writing and recording again. And so I did. It took time, and was very frustrating, but finally I completed a new song, and then another, and then another.

That first song is called “We Win” and it’s the first single from the EP “Film School”, a collection of mostly new songs.

Hope you enjoy!

Best
